As evolt user ic points out in the comments section on this article, you do
not need to use the hack presented in this evolt article to get horizontal
lists to work under Netscape 4.
In the article, the author says horizontal lists in NS4 don't render right
because NS4 still renders bullets even though the li elements are of
display:inline. Quite true. However NS4 understands both list-style and
list-style-type CSS properties. So rather than use the NS4 comment hack
presented in this evolt article, one need only apply a list-style-type set
to none to get it to work in NS4.
I've got an example of this in action at
http://webhost.bridgew.edu/etribou/layouts/2col_footer_04/
The above example also includes span elements at the end, but still inside
the li elements, that contain a pipe (|) character. This way when the list
is rendered in NS4 (and IE4 and other bad/no CSS browsers) there's a visual
separation between each item.
