You reasoned correctly. In fact, it's not horrific at all; it's just
as acceptable as using any other display value (inline, block,
list-item, etc.). The only stumbling block is browser support.

Did you try adjusting the padding/border-spacing properties? I
wouldn't be surprised if the extra space was from a default value
greater than zero.
