But don't forget that type that is too large can be as much of a hindrance
to one's ability to read a site comfortably as it would being too small.

Not that there seems to be a viable simple solution for that either right
now...

This has been an interesting conversation. It seems as if our bigger problem
isn't necessarily a CSS/standards problem but simply how the browser
addresses these issues in its default GUI...which most don't. Which makes
for a more valid argument for do-it-yourself style sheet switching widgets.
(Would love to see some evidence that those types of solutions are actually
used to a greater extent by users).
