It's been noted that somewhere between 8-16 words (30-40 em) per line is
optimum in many cases. However, the length of line isn't the only thing that
can kill legibility. So when you design you website make sure to take into
account the size of your type, the typeface you use, the color you're
writing on, the color of type, justification vs. ragged right, etc.
Personally when I'd look into making sure your line spacing is optimum for
your text. That can make a big difference if you choose a fluid layout.
(max-width is another great thing to look into but it comes with the caveat
that IE 6 doesn't recognize it)
