Then you just keep your browser width small.
I often browse with a browser window that's about 720px wide and 850px
tall. Occasionally I have to go 805px wide, or 1024px wide to fit some
not-so-well designed sites.

It's insane to go all maximized in high resolutions.

But I do agree that setting a max-width doesn't hurt. And for IE
users... Too bad for IE (tm)
They'll just have to resize their browser. It's a minor issue.

30 - 40 chars is good. Don't know about any research though.

(but don't go around setting a max-width of 40em, it doesn't work like
that. em is the width of the widest char. Typically 'M', occasionally
'W'.)
