[css-d] CSS as a diagnostic tool

Sent by Jim Wilkinson on 11 February 2003 18:06

Folks,

Two hundred or so listers have downloaded the diagnostic style sheet that I posted on the Wiki in
December:-

http://css-discuss.incutio.com/?page=DiagnosticCss

If you've used it to look at other people's sites, you will have found that many are based on
complex, row-spanned and col-spanned
nested tables, usually with spacer gifs* (listers won't find this situation with their own sites, of
course). In some cases, the diagnostic's
generated content can cause cell contents to overflow, obscuring other parts of the page (and their
diagnostics). I've therefore
updated the diagnostic to hide overflowed contents.

The declaration "overflow: hidden" is supported by Opera (5-7) and by NS7/Moz. A quick test suggests
that IE6 (incorrectly) uses
"hidden" as its initial value anyway.

If you've used the diagnostic, please mail me on- or off-list with your experiences. And especially
with your improvements!

* Presumably, this is what the major authoring tools are still generating (sigh).
