RE: [css-d] Height Question

Sent by Bill Creswell on 6 January 2003 19:07

Does this do what you want?

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>
<!-- Creation date: 1/6/2003 -->
<head>
<meta name="author" content="Van Eerden Distribution">
</head>
<body style=margin:0px;>
<div style=height:80px;background:red;>Header</div>
<div style=height:400px;>

<div style=float:left;height:100%;background:blue;width:20%>Left</div>

<div style=float:left;height:100%;background:gray;width:80%;overflow:auto;>
Right
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah</div>
<div style=clear:both></div>
</div>

<div style=height:10%;background:red>Footer</div>

</body>
</html>

I want to create a simple layout with a menu div and content div side-by-side. I want the menu to
have a background color and I would like that background to continue down the page for as long as
the content does (if the content is longer). The problem I am having is that the menu background
color will only continue down as far as the text in the menu div. Is there some way around this?

For a visualization of what I'd like, go to the following address:
http://personal.cobleskill.edu/fiored/css/

I've tried wrapping both the menu and content dividers in a container div and setting the menu
height to 100% and that didn't work... I can't seem to find a solution for this anywhere.

Is this even possible?
Thank you very much for any help given!!
