    In that case, you might want to read 
<http://devedge.netscape.com/viewsource/2002/img-table/> to see if 
that helps you in finding a workaround.  Note that despite its title 
("Images, Tables, and Mysterious Gaps") it is very likely relevant to 
your problem.
