[css-d] CSS, browsers affect ability to copy text in the web browser

Sent by Susan Kitchens on 2 January 2003 21:09

Happy New Year! It's my first post after lurking a while.

In the course of learning CSS, I've come up with a theory about something
that I'd previously noticed (and found bothersome): Some web sites won't
let me copy text.

My findings:

--Table-less layouts constructed with DIVs/IDs will allow the contents of
only one div to be copied.
--It's browser-specific: This happens while I browse using IE-Mac (v. 5),
but does not happen in Mozilla.

Would anyone confirm this? In your experience are there other browsers
that mimic IE-Mac's limited copy-ability behavior? Any CSS expert
suggestings for how to setup layout to bestow "copyable" status to the
page's primary DIV? (I'd rather design a site so that it's possible to
copy content than, say, a navigation sidebar.)

Cheers,

Susan
