[css-d] Fixed width within display:inline

Sent by Alex Robinson on 21 December 2002 21:09

[I seem to be asking rather a lot of questions - this is the last one for now]

I would like to make a horizontal menubar much like the examples in the ALA
taming lists article, in particular the tabbed one.

However the tabs shown are dependent on the size of the text within them.
Is there any way of getting the tabs to be a fixed size? In effect, is
there a way of using css to set the width of an element within another
element that has its display set to inline?

This was what I thought I might solve by my earlier question about using
:before to insert an image, although if I'd thought it through properly I'd
have realised it was a non-starter.

Here's my oh-so-not-working attempt

  <http://pix.cloudband.com/alex/csstest/InlineListFixedWidth.html>

which is simply the ALA version with width:100px added to the li and a
selectors.
