[css-d] floating problem - breaks up layout in moz/ie

Here is the site concerned:

I am trying to float the 'main' div so it doesn't wrap around the
leftnav div, however, when I introduce the float: left attribute in
#main, the entire layout breaks up. In IE6 (w or w/o quirks) I get a 1/2
pixel spacing on the right. In Mozilla the #main goes under the leftnav:

I am avoiding specifying widths (unless width:auto) in #main, so when I
turn off leftnav, the 'main' div should simply take up the entire space:
