[css-d] Div element considered harmful?

Sent by Jim Wilkinson on 26 November 2002 16:04

Folks,

I've read passing references in the list to use of the div element. They imply that it should be
used sparingly (if at all?) because it has no structural meaning, being simply an arbitrary
container. I don't want to start a war on this (at least, not until my own ideas are clearer) but
can
someone kindly supply references to discussions on the issue or, alternatively, provide a
succinct for-and-against summary? I can't find any pertinent discussion when searching the
css-d archive.

Since divs can, of course, be classed or id'd and then styled, I'm trying to decide if this is a
sound, semantic approach.

Many thanks,

Jim Wilkinson
