Not having been privy to the thoughts of the decision makers there, I can
still suggest a very plausible reason.
"Points" are a printing measure. As numerous folks here have harped about
how points are for printing not for screen display, perhaps the thought
behind this was to create a measure which would be to screen display what
points are for printing. As such it *needs* to have some sort of
independence from the physical display devices.
It's interesting go back through the list archives at the W3C. You'll find,
for example, a number of folks holding forth on the idea that points should
be preferable, because they are the only-device-independent measure, and
one even suggesting that pixels as a unit be deprecated.
Talk about users taking something far beyond the intent of the creators,
eh?
That's given me a couple of ideas.....
