another reason that I have learned to dislike using floats for
layout is that they remove the ability to optimize the unstyled
flow of a page. If you can produce a layout where the source
contains the content before the navigation, it makes the page
much more accessible in terms of page readers and also gives quite
a boost with S.E. indexing robots. One site I converted to absolute
positioning started ranking much better. (In fact previously the
"wrong" pages from the site had been turning up first in results
because the navigation to other parts of the site was being
considered as content.
