Just tested it again. The following scenario:

<link href="mfv4.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<style type="text/css">
<!--
@import url("mfv5.css");
-->
</style>

I'm afraid I cannot see mfv5.css evidence in IE4.01 on a PC not five
feet from me as I write. I don't know what to tell you. Both CSS files
are in the site root, as is the page. mfv5 is also hidden from IE4.5 on
our Mac.

Try removing the parentheses on your setup and see if that makes a
difference.
