IE won't display my background images

Wrong. You can have as many background declarations as you like.

Wrong. The values you use in the background shorthand can be written in any 
order; the property has been defined that way.

The w3schools site is known for its inaccuracies and plain errors. Consider 
reading the CSS recommendations by the W3C instead, or some good tutorials 
or textbooks.
