| When NN4 was created CSS was just a proposal, one of many,
| for dealing with
| formatting.
I do not believe any such defense of Netscape management
decisions is tenable.
CSS1 was a publicly available final recommendation before the
first public beta of NN4 was released -- and it was a stable
WD long before that. There then followed a period of 7 or 8
months before the final release of NN4.0
That calendar -- combined with the many statements by
Marc Andreeson attacking support for browser stylesheets over
a long period starting from 1994 -- takes any credence out
of any characterization of their attitude as a
"progressive gamble."
Their gamble was of a different nature -- and they lost.
Andreeson did walk off with billions, but there weren't
too many other winners.
