To take this in a slightly different track... On the page given at > <http://www.w3.org/TR/2008/REC-CSS2-20080411/visuren.html#floats> it says: "A floated box must have an explicit width (assigned via the 'width' property, or its intrinsic width in the case of replaced elements)."
