We use soEditor for our in-house CMS and are reasonably happy with it.
We bought the open source license which allows you some degree of
customization (in the dialog boxes and so on). It produces ok -- not
great -- HTML, but not XHTML, and is not terribly buggy. It is certainly
well worth the very low cost. It has pretty good tools for sweeping out
Word document codes and other junk.
If I remember right, the Ektron editor is more expensive and requires a
client install, which we wanted to avoid, but it may be worth it in
reliability and features.
Personally I think the "right" way to do this is in Flash, but so far
there is not a good Flash editor. (I've tried the Ektron one, called
eWebWP, but at this point it is extremely limited.) A Flash editor would
be platform independent and not prone to DHTML bugs. So I'm waiting ...
