Cutting and Pasting from Word?!

Sent by Cameron McNeil on 6 November 2003 23:11

I just thought I'd jump in here as well. Although LiveConnect doesn't really
exist on OS X there are a number of work a rounds that simulate the way
LiveConnect works. We've been using our own custom solution since version
1.0 of our product EditLive! for Java (http://www.ephox.com) and our latest
version includes support for Safari and JRE 1.4.1. The LiveConnect issues on
Safari has been logged with Apple, Radar ID 3469437. Also like Ektron we've
invested a great deal of time in supporting content pasted from Word with
various options to preserve formatting and styles or remove to them from the
content.

Best Regards,
Cameron McNeil

Well the biggest issue with Java-based HTML editors is that despite being
portable, they don't work well on MacOS X platforms. So far the only
browser that supports LiveConnect on MacOS X is Mozilla, and it only
supports JDK 1.3.1 (Apple now installs JDK 1.4.1 by default).

The worst case on this platform is that the default browser is now Safari,
and this browser does not implement LiveConnect, and doesn't even offer a
dynamic editor like Mozilla and IE offer (contentEditable or Javascript
API). So without even going to the problematic of Word import you've got a
portability problem on Mac platforms !
