Cutting and Pasting from Word?!

Sent by Rob Wells on 6 November 2003 05:05

Hi Peter,

You're right in that most MS-based WYSIWYG editors have similar
capabilities. However they are generally much more advanced than (for
instance) the Java alternatives.

I think the Word formatting issue you're seeing is probably due to the fact
that the product is "cleaning up" the nasty HTML code that Word creates.
Most editors will do this, as it helps with several issues:

- Style sheet management
- Cross browser content display compatibility
- Load times
- Code standards compliance
- Better separation of content and layout

It is possible to paste your content with the formatting completely intact
(i.e. looking exactly like it did in Word), but it's generally not a good
idea. I believe the Ektron system cleans the code automatically, but you can
probably turn that feature off. In our own product we have implemented it as
a user-requested function and given the user fine control over whether they
clean Word tags, class tags, style tags, anchors, font tags, divs and spans,
etc... Some of our customers prefer to keep the Word formatting (e.g. in
intranet scenarios). However we generally recommend strongly against doing
that.

Cheers,
Rob.
